Zelensky is expected to visit Washington today, the first time he leaves Ukraine

Volodymyr Zelensky will visit Washington to meet US President Joe Biden on Wednesday, the White House has confirmed.

This is his first trip abroad since Russia launched the war in February this year. He will also be given the opportunity to address Congress.

He regularly hosts foreign leaders in the capital, Kiev, and has visited troops around Ukraine. He recently made an unannounced visit to the city of Bakhmut on Tuesday. Zelensky's office formally accepted the invitation to Washington last Friday, before the visit was finally confirmed on Sunday.

In a letter Tuesday, Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi urged members of Congress to be present Wednesday night. "Please be present for a very special focus on democracy," Nancy Pelosi wrote, but did not provide other details.

The Ukrainian president has also spoken frequently with world leaders by phone and video calls – mostly from his office in Kiev. Yes, this marks his first visit abroad since the beginning of the war and also signals the importance of Ukraine's relations with the US.
