A sad message from NASA's Insight space robot has touched social media users, raising questions about the response.

On Monday, the bot relayed a statement saying: "My battery is dying so this may be the last image I send."

The robot has been sent on a mission to Mars to study the interior of the planet. But the accumulation of dust on its solar panels has caused it to lose power.

“Don't worry about me anyway: my time here has been productive and peaceful. If I'm going to continue talking to my mission team, I will, but I'll be out of here soon. Thanks for sticking with me," Insight concludes.

Twitter users have expressed their sad reactions to the bot. "Why am I crying over a robot?" asks one of them. Another stated that "This makes them avatars of our best collective qualities. I am crying and my gratitude to the people who make these missions possible is endless".

Insight was sent to Mars in May 2018 and is the first robotic space explorer to study Mars in depth: its crust, mantle and core.
