Experts: 2023 will be the hottest year in history!

2023 is predicted to be one of the hottest years on record, if not the hottest according to British meteorologists.

Forecasters in the UK think this will be the 10th consecutive year in which global temperatures will stay at least 1 degree Celsius above pre-industrial levels of the 1850-1900 period.

Currently, the record for heat is held by 2016, the year when an "El Niño" climate pattern in the Pacific raised temperatures beyond the warnings of global warming trends. 2023 is now estimated to be around 1.2 degrees Celsius above what it was before human activity started driving climate change, the Met Office says.

The head of forecasts at this institution, Professor Adam Scaife, says that "without a previous El Nino to increase the global temperature, 2023 may not have broken the record. But with the background increase in global greenhouse gas emissions continuing apace, it is likely that next year will be another 'different year in this series', he points out. Experts worry that areas like the Arctic have already warmed several degrees above pre-industrial levels.
