In late 2022, America began "rigorous preparation" for the possibility that Russia would attack Ukraine with a nuclear weapon.

This is what CNN reports in an exclusive material, citing two government sources, who say it would have been the first nuclear attack in the war since the US dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki nearly eighty years ago.

The Biden administration was particularly concerned that Russia might use a tactical or battlefield nuclear weapon, officials said.

CNN analyst and journalist Jim Sciutto, in his book "The Return of the Great Powers", which is published on March 12, reveals details about the unprecedented preparation of the emergency program in the US government and the extremely high level of alarm. What pushed the Biden administration to this disturbing assessment was not a single indicator, but a multitude of developments, analyzes and secret intelligence information, writes CNN.

From the summer to the fall of 2022, members of the US National Security Council have been meeting repeatedly to determine plans in the event of a nuclear attack, but have not specified what the steps would be in response to Russia. At that time, Putin's army was suffering heavy losses in Ukraine and constantly released information and accusations against Kiev in the media for using dirty, cluster or harmful chemical bombs as a pretext for a tactical nuclear attack.

Meanwhile, in addition to preparations, the US tried to enlist the help of countries considered rivals, especially China and India, to discourage Russia from such an attack.
