US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will next week be in Israel, the West Bank and Egypt, where he will call for an end to the violence following deadly raids by Israelis, the US State Department said.

Blinken will hold the first face-to-face meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu since he returned to power in Israel, leading the most right-wing government in the country's history.

The American diplomat will also meet in Ramallah with the Palestinian leader, Mahmoud Abbas, during the visit that will take place on Monday and Tuesday.

Blinken "will emphasize the urgent need for the parties to take steps to deescalate the situation in order to end the cycle of violence that has claimed many innocent lives," DASH spokesman Ned Price said.

Blinken will begin the visit on Sunday in Egypt, which is a key mediator between Israelis and Palestinians. This country has also managed to maintain good relations with the administration of the American president, Joe Biden, despite the fact that Washington has expressed concerns about Cairo's respect for human rights.

Blinken will also discuss regional issues, including the situation in Libya and Sudan during the meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, DASH said.

Blinken's long-planned trip comes as the violence erupts. Nine Palestinians were killed Wednesday in an Israeli raid on a refugee camp in the West Bank city of Jenin./REL
