Donald Trump is running for a third term as president of the United States, hoping to become the second president in American history to serve non-consecutive terms. Polls show that most Republican Party voters do not think he should be their nominee. To find out what level of support Mr. Trump now enjoys in one of his historic strongholds, VOA correspondent Steve Herman visited the town of Mount Storm in West Virginia.

An ideal place to gauge current support for Republican Donald Trump is Grant County in West Virginia. In both 2016 and 2020, Mr. Trump won about 88 percent of the vote in this area.

This deep result is no surprise to the editor-in-chief of the county's only newspaper, the Grant County Press, Camille Howard.

"Most of the residents here are Republicans and the candidate of this party is certain of victory," she says.

Fewer than 700 of the county's 7,000 voters are registered Democrats.

Among them is former psychologist Frank Miller, who is trying to understand why so many of his neighbors are ardent supporters of Mr. Trump.

"It's a cult. I am a psychologist, I understand how cults work, where there is a suspension of reality. They all focus on what their cult leader says," he says.

During his four-year presidency, Mr. Trump tried to save West Virginia's coal industry, saying the solar industry, also growing in Grant County, "is not strong enough." He has also criticized wind turbines, 100 of which have been installed in the area.

"They say noise causes cancer. They make noise and kill the birds," says Mr. Trump.

It is a long time until the 2024 presidential election, and it is still not clear who will receive the most support in the primaries. But in Grant County, many of those who voted for Mr. Trump the past two elections plan to do so again.

"Most people I know who voted for Mr. Trump before would vote for him again."

Jodi Ours, a former hospital employee, is the sister-in-law of local Grant County official Jerry Ours.

"I think he will maintain and increase the support he had here. I think he will achieve this, regardless of who will be in the race," he says.

Donald Trump has won two presidential elections in West Virginia, but for the 2024 election he will have more Republican challengers than four years ago, when he was in the post of President of the country./VOA
