Pedagogy Caroline Wilkinson from the University of Liverpool has illustrated the "most realistic" portrait of Santa Claus.

This is the portrait that most closely approximates the real portrait of Santa

It is about Saint Nicholas, a bishop who lived in the fourth century and who liked to distribute gifts secretly.

His image was created using a facial reconstruction system and 3D technology from Liverpool John Moores University's Face Lab.

Caroline Wilkinson has said that it is based on "all available historical material". The saint, who died in 343, was the Greek bishop of Myra. The city, now known as Demre, lies on the southern coast of Turkey.

He was said to have left secret gifts, such as placing coins in shoes that had been left out, making him the model for Father Christmas.
