Gun attack on a prison in Mexico, several dead, dozens escaped

24 inmates have escaped from a prison in northern Mexico after gunmen, suspected to be members of a drug cartel, attacked the prison building with firearms.

The attack on the Chihuahua state prison happened shortly after 07:00 (local time).

The armed group arrived at the exterior of the prison in armored vehicles, while they first opened fire on the prison guards.

The BBC reports that as a result of the armed attack, ten people were killed, including four prisoners, while 13 prisoners were injured.

Four of them are being treated in hospital, prison authorities said.

The army and national guard have been called in to support local authorities in arresting the perpetrators.

The city of Chihuahua has seen years of violent clashes between the rival Sinaloa and Juarez drug cartels, killing thousands in the past decade.
