Several killed and injured in explosion at Kabul military airport

Taliban authorities in Afghanistan said that several people were killed or injured in the explosion that occurred on the morning of January 1 at the military airport, which is adjacent to Kabul International Airport.

Kabul security operations spokesman Khalid Zadra told Radio Free Europe's Radio Azadi that "a number of our fellow citizens were martyred or injured" in the suspected bomb attack. He added that the investigation into this incident has started.

Zadra did not specify the exact number of victims.

The spokesman of the Ministry of Interior, Abdul Nafi Takor, also said that several people were killed or injured, without giving the exact number of victims.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack. Since the Taliban took power in August 2021, the state has been targeted by the extremist group, the Islamic State.

On December 27, IS claimed responsibility for an attack in Afghanistan's Badakhshan province that killed a key Taliban security official. An armed resistance movement against the Taliban, known as the National Resistance Front (NRF), is it has also been active in northern Afghanistan.

The military airport where the January 1 attack took place is located about 200 meters from Kabul International Airport and close to Afghanistan's Ministry of Interior. In October, the Ministry of Interior building was the target of an attack, when at least four people were killed.

Other security ministries, as well as foreign embassies and the presidential palace, are on the road to the Kabul International Airport and the military one.

According to reports, the military airport was damaged but not completely destroyed. Also, it is reported that the Taliban security forces have surrounded this area, preventing photos and videos of the place where the attack took place.
