The presidents of Russia and China held a video conference. Kremlin chief Putin invited Xi for a state visit to Moscow.
In a video call with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared his willingness to strengthen military cooperation between the two countries. "We want to strengthen cooperation between the armed forces of Russia and China," Putin told Xi.
Putin called the Chinese president a "dear friend" and announced that Xi would come to Moscow for a state visit in the spring. Putin praised the efforts of Moscow and Beijing to resist pressure from the West. "In the background of unprecedented pressure and provocations from the West, we are defending our positions and principles," Putin said.
Xi: Respect international laws
According to Chinese state television CCTV, Xi stressed in the conversation that Russia and China coordinate and cooperate closely on international issues. Meanwhile, both parties to the conflict must respect the authority of the United Nations and the status of international law.
Xi said the road to peace talks for Ukraine will not be easy and that China will continue to maintain its "objective and fair stance" on the conflict.
China is trying to position itself as neutral in the conflict, but offers diplomatic support to its strategic ally Russia.
Putin wants cooperation at the military level
Putin wants to expand cooperation with Beijing at the military and technical level. "We share the same views on the causes, course and logic of the ongoing change in the global geopolitical landscape," the Kremlin chief said.
Due to the sanctions imposed by Western countries on Russia after its war of aggression against Ukraine, Moscow wants to strengthen relations with Beijing and is also looking at other energy markets in Asia.
In recent months, Russia and China have conducted several joint military exercises, including a naval exercise this week in the East China Sea.
