A large number of tourists have been killed at a resort in Indian-administered Kashmir after gunmen opened fire on Tuesday.
Indian authorities, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, called the incident a "terrorist attack" as initial reports indicated that gunmen opened fire on mostly Indian tourists visiting the Baisaran meadow, about 5 kilometers from the tourist town of Pahalgam.
According to reports in Indian media, the number of tourists killed has reached 26, and most of them are Hindu Indians, who were attacked by Pakistani Islamist extremists in this area that is part of the territorial disputes between the two countries.
Prime Minister Omar Abdullah said that "the attack is far bigger than anything we have seen directed at civilians in recent years."
"This attack on our visitors is an abomination," he said in a statement. "The perpetrators of this attack are animals, inhumane and worthy of contempt."
In a post on social media platform X, the region's governor, Manoj Sinha, condemned the "cowardly terrorist attack on tourists." He added: "I assure the people that those behind this despicable attack will not go unpunished."
At least two of the remaining tourists killed are suspected to be foreign nationals who were in Kashmir.
