US President Donald Trump has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff across the country as a "mark of respect for the memory" of Pope Francis, who died on Monday morning at the Vatican.
In an official announcement from the White House, Trump announced that the order applies to all public buildings, military posts and naval stations, as well as to all vessels under the US flag, both at home and abroad, including embassies and military facilities on international territory.
"This is an honor for a man who lived humbly, preached peace, and gave voice to the silenced in every corner of the world," the announcement said.
The American flag atop the White House was lowered to half-staff Monday morning, while the traditional Easter Egg Roll was taking place on the South Lawn.
Further, President Trump confirmed that he will personally attend the Pope's funeral in Rome.
"Melania and I will be attending Pope Francis' funeral. We can't wait to be there!" he wrote on his platform, Truth Social.
