In the figures - Pension index, is it enough in the face of the price avatar?

In the decision to increase pensions by 3.3 percent, the Government says it is indexing the increase in overall prices to the third age.

Pensions increase for 18 categories, starting on April 1st, and growth ranges by category from 250 lek, up to approximately 1 thousand leks.

If it is considered that only one minute of cooking oil has gone to market about 4,000 leks, the government's index sounds insufficient. But insufficient is not just in perception. According to data released by Instat, consumer price inflation in February was 0.6 percent higher than the government's pension index.

The strongest price increase compared to last year's average is reported in the "nonalcoholic food and drink" group by 6.9 percent.

Within the food group the prices of the subgroup "vegetables including potatoes" increased by 16.4 percent, followed by subgroups "oils and fats" with 10.1 percent, "fruit" with 7.0 percent, "bread and grain" with 6.8 percent, "sugar, jam, honey, chocolates and sweets" with 6.7 percent, "meat" with 3.9 percent, "milk, cheese and eggs" at 3.3 percent.

According to these Instat data, the pension index the government has made will serve pensioners to offset price increases only in the "milk, cheese and eggs" group, as other products range from two to fivefold more expensive than the modest value of pension increases.
