The violence recorded during the recent protests in Tirana is unacceptable and citizens' grievances must be addressed through democratic institutions.

This was the message of the European Union Ambassador to Albania, Sofia Moreira de Sousa, who reacted after the escalation of the protests, emphasizing that the destruction of public and private property cannot be a way to express dissatisfaction.

During a statement to the media in Elbasan, the ambassador stated that violence has no place in a democratic society and that institutions must be able to respond to citizens' concerns.

"This should not happen in democratic countries. This should not happen in countries where we defend our democracy. There should be no violence in the streets."

"The dissatisfaction of citizens must be addressed and it is necessary to address it within democratic institutions, which, for their part, have the duty, the capacity and must prove that they are able to respond to these dissatisfactions," declared De Sousa.

She emphasized that for this purpose, it is necessary to strengthen the capacities of institutions and engage all social actors to prevent situations from escalating into violence.

"We all have a lot of work to do: politicians, civil servants, and citizens in general, to strengthen the capacity of democratic institutions to respond to these grievances, so that the situation does not escalate into violence in the streets," said the ambassador.

De Sousa also paid special attention to the inclusion of young people and civil society in democratic life. According to her, it is important to explain to young people the rules of how democracy works and the institutional ways to seek solutions.

"We must engage with young people, with civil society, with everyone, to include them and explain to them the rules of the game of democracy. We cannot address these grievances by destroying public and private property and violating public order and peace," she declared.

The Ambassador added that citizens should be able to express their beliefs and concerns through democratic mechanisms, where municipalities and local authorities also have an important role.

The statements were made following the fourth meeting of the CoR-Albania Joint Consultative Committee, which focused on the role of local government in the European integration process.

The co-chair of this committee, Antonio Mazzeo, also stated that violence cannot be an acceptable means of political expression in a democratic society, while emphasizing the importance of peaceful protests.

"Peaceful protest is a completely legitimate and democratic means through which citizens should demand that their voices be heard," Mazzeo said.

He called on institutions and protesters to act responsibly and avoid any escalation of the situation.

"The sustainability of a democracy is not measured only by the ability to guarantee public order, but also by the ability of institutions to maintain political pluralism, democratic representation and the trust of citizens," he concluded.
