The General Directorate of Prisons has changed the institution serving pre-trial detention for the mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, who has been transferred from the Durrës Penitentiary Institution to the Fier Penitentiary Institution.

This development caused numerous reactions, as on the show "Albania Live" with Sidorela Gjon, his lawyer, Plarent Ndreca, spoke about the behind-the-scenes events in the Socialist Party regarding this decision.

Moderator : Have there been other SP MPs who have asked you for information about Veliaj?

Ndreca: There was, of course.

Moderator : Does the situation seem normal to them?

Ndreca: No, absolutely. And I believe that this was also expressed today at the meeting of the socialist group, because it is not only Mr. Çuçi who expressed this, he was probably the most vocal. I speak according to the information I have, because I was not present either.

There were other members of the parliamentary group who supported him on this point. I have also had more than 7-8 colleagues call me, very concerned, in a state of frustration as to why this is happening and why it has reached this point.

Because we are all together, a group, and that is the whole absurdity of this story. When it is done to the incumbent mayor, what can be done to another citizen who perhaps does not have this public visibility?

The standard is the same for every citizen of Albania and we are not asking for privilege because of the duty. We are asking to enable the duty, by keeping it close. It is made possible for you to exercise your duty, because it is a constitutional obligation. It is a right that every detainee has, not only Mr. Veliaj.

We are currently in complete information darkness. I sent an official email yesterday at 4 pm and I still have no response.
