After nearly 2,000 years, Artificial Intelligence gives a face to the Pompeii victim who tried to protect herself from Vesuvius

He died while trying to protect himself from the rocks and ash that fell on Pompeii. Nearly two thousand years later, technology has given a human face to his story.

Archaeologists in Pompeii used artificial intelligence and image processing techniques to create a digital reconstruction of a man who lost his life during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.

The remains were found near Porta Stabia.

The man had with him a large terracotta pot, which archaeologists believe he was using as a shield over his head to protect himself from lapilli, the small volcanic rocks that fell on the city.

An oil lamp, a small iron ring, and ten bronze coins were also found near it.

By combining skeletal and archaeological data, the team created a visual image of the victim: a man hunched over, holding the container above his head, while Vesuvius erupts behind him.

Archaeologists emphasize that this is not an accurate photograph of the man as he actually looked. It is a visual interpretation based on available data, not a biometric identification.

But technology has a powerful effect: it turns an anonymous skeleton into a person the reader can imagine in the final moments of life.

Pompeii was buried by the eruption of Vesuvius, and it was the catastrophe that preserved the buildings, objects, and victims in a unique way.

Now AI is adding another tool to archaeology: not only to discover what happened, but also to make the past more visually present.
