"Pandora's box"! The legend of the Goddess who freed hell, but
Legend of the Goddess

Most people are familiar with the creation of Adam and Eve through the book of Genesis. But the story of the creation of mankind in Greek mythology is perhaps less well known, and is arguably darker in tone, when compared to Genesis.

To begin with, men and women were not created at the same time. Men existed before the advent of women and degenerated over time. Besides, the creation of the first woman, Pandora, was not a gift from the Gods to man, but a punishment.

In the Greek creation myth, as recorded in the Greek poet Hesiod's Acts and Days (8th century BC), there were five ages. The first of these was the Golden Age, where people were immortal and lived on Olympus. They were made of gold and lived like Gods. When this age ended, humans became good spirits, guarding mortals. The next age was the Silver Age, where man was made of silver, and still lived on Olympus. They were no longer immortal. The two subsequent ages were the Bronze Age and the Heroic Age. In the first, people were made of bronze, while in the second, the Earth was populated by the heroes of Greek mythology. Both eras were ended by constant wars. The last age, which is the present, is the Iron Age, where people toil and suffer all their lives.

While the myths in Hesiod's works are not entirely arranged in chronological order, it is difficult to pinpoint in which era of mankind Pandora was created.

Pandora's story, however, is inextricably linked with that of the Titan Prometheus, whose story begins in Mekone and can probably be set sometime after the Silver Age. It was in this place that Prometheus cut a bull and split it in two. The smaller part contained the meat of the animal wrapped in the stomach of the bull, while the larger part had the bones of the animal, covered by a layer of shiny fat. Prometheus succeeded in tricking the Gods, while they chose the larger portion, mankind was left with edible meat.

Enraged by Prometheus' trickery, Zeus took fire away from mankind so they could not cook the meat. This led Prometheus to steal fire from the Gods, which resulted in his punishment, being chained, in the company of an eagle that ate his liver, which would grow again at night. Prometheus was finally freed by the hero Heracles. Zeus was not content to punish Prometheus alone, but he also punished mankind.

Pandora's Gift

Zeus fashioned a maiden from earth and water, and gave her a human voice and strength. Then the Gods gave her many gifts. Athena taught her the craft, Aphrodite gave her "beauty in her head" as well as "stabbing burning desire and consuming anxiety", while Hermes gave her a "brutal" mind and a dishonest nature. The lady was then dressed and beautified by the Gods. As the lady was charged with many gifts by the Gods, she was called Pandora, which literally means "all gifts". Pandora was indeed a face to behold, albeit a dangerous one

Pandora was then sent by Hermes to Epitemeus, brother of Prometheus, as a gift. Although Prometheus had warned his brother not to accept any gifts from Zeus, Epimetheus had forgotten this warning and took Pandora as his wife.

Pandora was beauty to behold, and when he saw her, Epithemeus forgot all his warnings about not accepting a gift from Zeus.

Pandora and the Forbidden Box

Zeus, satisfied that his trap was working, gave Pandora a beautiful outer box as a wedding gift. In Hesiod's original version, the gift was actually a "pithos," or jar. Until the 16th century the word was translated jar, but then the word was mistranslated into 'box'.

Pandora released Hope and she flapped her arms outside the box, touching the wounds created by the evil Pandora had released. Even today, hope still remains for humanity even in the darkest of times. As the British poet Alexander Pope once wrote: "Hope springs eternally from the human breast."
