In a remote village in Turkey, researchers have discovered what is believed to be the oldest fairy tale in the world, a full 10,000 years old. Several figures were found carved on the walls of a cave, which together tell the story of two men who are attacked by wild animals and protected by them.

The discovery was made by archaeologists from Istanbul University in the village of Sayburç. The carvings were found in the ruins of a building from the Neolithic period, located below the present-day village.

According to them, this is not only the earliest engraving in history found to date, but shows the complicated relationship between humans, nature and animals in that era of mankind. Archeology Dr. Eylem Özdoğan, from Istanbul University, said in a statement to the media that these figures tell a real story and are connected to each other. "Through these engravings, people of that period formed their ideas," she said.

The works in this place continue from 2021 and to reveal the secrets of the Neolithic period, whole layers of mud had to be removed. The excavations brought to light the fact that people have lived there since the ninth millennium BC.

"This period was important because during it, human behavior changed, from being hunters in groups and always on the move, to farmers who settled in a certain place for a long time," the researchers said.

The wall where the story of the two men is told was found inside what is considered a dwelling of the time, with a diameter of 12 meters. "All the figures look towards each other, while that of the man looks from the room and holds the genital organ in his hand", says the study published in the magazine "Antiquity".

"While the other man has his back turned and holds a snake in his six-fingered hand. The leopards' mouths are open and seem ready to attack. Also there appears a bull with huge horns, like the teeth of leopards are enlarged".

"Archaeological evidence can show us some of the traditions of past societies, but these rarely survive time, so this discovery is really exciting," said Dr Özdoğan. "Sayburç brings very clear evidence of this period and we can learn much more about the Neolithic".
