Founded in 1118 by the aristocrat Hygo di Payns, in respect to the request of San Bernardo di Chiaravalle at the end of the first crusade.
The order of the Templars was originally composed of 11 French monks armed with swords, whose duty it was to protect the pilgrims traveling along the holy road from Jaffa to Jerusalem from the infidels.
The Arabs called the Templars "white devils". The birth of this order must be connected in a territorial and historical sense with the Holy Land which was at the center of the wars between Christian and Islamic forces after the first crusade, when the roads to the Holy Land were endangered by robbers and Islamic fanatics who they attacked and robbed pilgrims.
The order, which had its headquarters in the place where it was believed that the temple of Solomon (from which it got its name) was born in antiquity, was recognized by the Church in 1129 and was subsequently granted great privileges.
Beard and mustache
The first Knights were laymen, but being chaste, obedient and poor, this allowed the Order to accumulate infinite wealth, also as a result of the transfer of monetary values to and from the Holy Land. A good part of these assets were used for the construction of 9 thousand churches, palaces and fortified places.
They lived according to very strict rules: they were obliged to observe frequent religious holidays, to fast according to the Christian rite, to do charity, to consume food in peace while listening to a Bible reading, to keep short hair, beard and moustache. . They wore white robes with a red cross on the left shoulder and their ultimate authority was the Grand Master.
The influence of the Templars (in 1147 their number was about 300, but very soon they numbered thousands) spread rapidly throughout Europe, and their wealth grew at a dizzying rate (they were very close to inheriting the kingdom of Aragon in Spain.)
The decline of this order began in 1307: accused of sodomy, treason, greed and idolatry, hundreds of Templars were arrested, tortured and sentenced to the stake by the king of France, Philip IV, perhaps afraid of their power, and in 1312 the Order was closed by the Council of Vienna.
Legends about the Templars
The strongly mystical character of the Order of the Templars was its location in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, the very place where Solomon's temple had been born. This very fact has led to the flourishing of many legends about the Templars, who even today have many steadfast supporters.
One of the legends is the taking possession of the Holy Grail, as well as the Ark of the Covenant, and this gave them the power of an occult government above all other governments.
Legend, but with a possible basis of truth: according to most historians, their wealth made them all-powerful and out of control. In a century, in the 1300s, when the state sought to emancipate itself from the Church, the Templars were a dangerous obstacle to cross.
Where did the treasure of the Templars end up?
According to some accounts, the Templars continued to prosper in secret for years as guardians of vast riches. Effectively, by means of the Ad Providam act on May 2, 1312, which was followed by the Council of Vienna, they ordered that the assets of the Templars be transferred to the Hospitaller Order.
If in France the resourceful King Philip IV claimed from the Cavaliers of Malta, "as heirs" of the Templars, an economic compensation greater than what they had confiscated, in other countries of Europe many enthroned people claimed their share from the property of the Templars in the respective domains.
In Portugal, for example, the fortunes of the Templars ended up in the Order of Christ, created to fight the Moors, and with their fortunes they financed the Navy which, two centuries later, would guarantee the Lusitanian kingdom a leading role in the Age of Discovery. geographical.
The same thing happened in Spain, where a military structure created to meet the Saracen threat, the Military Order of Nostra Signora di Montesa confiscated the material goods and property of the Templars and part of their knights.
In Germany the Templar properties were divided between the Teutonic Knights, while the properties of the Order of Malta, former Templars, were seized in 1500 by Henry VIII after the break with Rome.
The remaining properties in France had the same fate with the Revolution.
The real treasure of the Templars
The famous monks, warriors of the Middle Ages were characterized by a special longevity, living twice the age expectations of that period. The secret lay in the way of eating, which was based on a diet similar to the Mediterranean diet. This version is supported by Francesco Franceschi, director of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Policlinico Gemelli Rome.
From the documents analyzed by the researchers comes the information that in daily life, the Templars followed iron rules (and this was known), starting from the obligation to wash their hands before sitting down to eat to a detailed diet program that provided for meat only twice a week. On their tables there was plenty of fish, fresh fruit and olive oil, seafood with their Omega-3 content. Three dishes with legumes were also programmed. Water was always added with orange juice. Wine was allowed, but rationed, which was accompanied by aloe vera pulp, which is antiseptic and fungicidal.
