Ernesto “peshkopi”

Contrary to the image we have of Guevara, when he was young he was the type of person we call a "bishop". He played chess and even participated in some local competitions. Apart from the time he spent with his chess friends, he read the poems he loved with great passion. His favorite subjects at school were math and engineering.

Cuban or not?

While Che Guevara is best remembered for his actions in Cuba, he was actually born in Argentina. The interesting fact is that he was born into a rich family and never became a Cuban citizen. When he was born, the first thing his father said was, "What is immediately noticeable is that my son has Irish rebel blood in his blood."

Rebel with the title of doctor

In June 1953, Che Guevara completed his medical studies and graduated as Dr. Ernesto Guevara. While studying medicine, he was particularly interested in the disease leprosy. Che can be considered a rebel with the title of doctor.

Travel to the USA

In 1964 Che traveled to the US to give a speech at the United Nations in New York. While he condemned the US for its racial segregation policies, he said: “Those who kill their children and discriminate against them every day because of the color of their skin; those who let the killers of blacks go free while protecting and further punishing the black population for demanding the legitimate right to live as free people - how can they consider themselves the guardians of freedom?"

Che's five children

We are used to seeing Guevara as a revolutionary, without imagining him as a family man, but in fact he had a child with his first wife, Hilda Gadea. He had a daughter born in Mexico City on February 15, 1956, as well as four children with his second wife, the revolutionary Aleida March. In the photo is Che's son, Camilo.

Without hands

After his execution, a military doctor cut off Che's hands. The Bolivian military buried his body in an unmarked grave. The hands were preserved to be sent to Buenos Aires for fingerprint identification, as they had been recorded in Argentine police files. In 1997, Guevara's remains were found and sent to Cuba, where they were reburied in a ceremony attended by President Fidel Castro and thousands of Cubans.

Numerous photos of his face have become the world's most commercial images, appearing on a variety of objects, such as t-shirts, posters, tattoos. Ironically his image has contributed to the consumer culture he deeply despised. The original image reproduced throughout was shot by photographer Alberto Korda.

St. Ernest

Guevara remains a beloved national hero to many in Cuba, where schoolchildren say every morning, "We're going to be like Che." Meanwhile, Guevara has been canonized by some farmers in Bolivia as "Saint Ernesto", to whom they pray for help. Needless to say, the Catholic Church does not consider Guevara a saint and opposes this kind of worship of him.
