Germany is adapting the preparation of its special forces for the possibility of a military conflict with Russia, radically changing the training method and operational tactics of the elite KSK unit.

The commander of this unit, Andreas Kühne, has confirmed that Russia is now the main adversary on which German special forces training scenarios are based.

"We are very specifically oriented towards the adversary that Russia represents," Kühne told the German newspaper Bild.

The main difference is related to the duration and complexity of the operations.

While previously special missions were planned for about three days, soldiers are now training for much longer stays in the field, in difficult conditions and with limited support.

The preparation includes facing an adversary equipped with tanks, artillery, drones, and advanced electronic warfare systems.

Special attention is paid to operations in extremely low temperatures, similar to the climatic conditions on NATO's eastern flank.

The KSK unit is located at the Zeppelin barracks, in the town of Calw near Stuttgart, and has around 1,500 members.

However, only a third of the personnel are special forces operators, while the rest perform support and administrative functions.

The selection for this unit is among the most rigorous in the German military, with only about 15% of candidates successfully completing the process.
