Note: Since 2009, December 8 has been announced as National Youth Day and an official holiday. The vote in the Assembly at that time was made to honor the students of 1990, who stood up against the communist regime and overthrew it with the slogans 'We love Albania like all of Europe'.
But, is Albania today like all of Europe? In every ranking, survey, document, analysis and report, our country ranks at the bottom when it comes to state formation, rule of law, crime, competition and democracy. So, practically more than three decades of these calls the promise has not been kept.
The main culprits are those who were in charge and were in charge of decision-making, but failed spectacularly. Confirmation comes from the numbers of young people who have left the country and surveys that show that at least 80 percent of those who have remained want, or are planning to leave.
Today, businesses cannot find employees and are turning to countries like Bangladesh and Nepal, which are replacing Albanians who leave for a better life. The reason is the vicious and chaotic model chosen for economic development. In developed countries, the economy dictates political decisions, here in our country, over the years, politics and daily routines have dictated the development of the economy.
The reason is greed and corruption. This is confirmed by the fact that the most profitable companies in the country to this day remain those that feed on citizens' money; that is, with tenders, concessions and PPPs.
Today cartels dictate prices in the market and are spread everywhere. To oil, where the peak was reached with the board of supposed transparency, but which is actually controlled by the fuel oligarchs, to flour, imports of chemical fertilizers for the farmer, and even to the production of concrete.
Everyone agrees on how much they will beat the citizen. No one competes and all these violations are done under the nose of the authorities, who legally should protect the citizen, but practically serve to rehabilitate friends at work, or fill their pockets with salaries and corruption money.
These are some of the reasons why the youth today do not have the enthusiasm of the youth of the '90s. They do not see a future here today and the expression "this country cannot be done" is heard everywhere.
Hospitals today have no doctors, no equipment. But four big concessions have been given in health.
Albanians today are the poorest people in Europe, but the Ministry of Infrastructure has granted 2.6 billion euros in concessions and will install beams on the road from Fieri to Milot. Albanians are poor, but the government launches tenders worth millions of euros for installations.
70 percent of working Albanians barely make ends meet with the salary they receive, according to surveys by the European Commission, while other reports from DASH, Brussels and international organizations indicate a high level of legislative corruption, or to put it more simply; laws imposed on an individual or a group of individuals and to the detriment of the public interest.
These are the indicators that prove that if in '92 the youth was driven away by poverty and the desire for freedom, then Albanians and young people in particular were driven out by bad governance. She kicked them out after '97, after 2005 and after 2013.
Today, the only positive balance of December 8, apart from the freedom it brought, is the rest day it left, at least for the administration since 2009.
