At a time when Europe is eager for gas after sanctions imposed on Russia, Albania is abusing two historic gas-holding areas by experimenting in giving them to inexperienced and related companies.
The government on Thursday approved the agreement signed between Albpetrol and EDG Natural Gas for production and production development at the frakull and Povelça natural gas source in Fier. The agreement between Albpetrol and EDG Natural Gas will be made public with the publication in the Official Journal of this decision, but the Government's decision stipulates that Albpetrol will share production with the private company.
But who's behind EDG Natural Gas? From data deposited at QKR, EDG Natural Gas is founded on April 15, 2021, just over a year ago. It is owned at 90 percent by energy development group and 10 percent by Impacto Communications.
Energy Development Group is owned in 100 percent of it by businessman Sokol Meqemeja. This company was founded in September 2008 under the name "Frigo Food Energy Invest".
This is not the first time that businessman Sokol Meqemeja, with strong ties in politics both right and left, has been favoured by government decisions. In the autumn of 2021, the Government passed 2,000 square metres of state property for palace construction in Tirana to a company, which until 2014 was controlled by Meqemeja. In this year, the latter donates his shares to another citizen, leaving behind allegations that he continues to control the company through this citizen.
