If you had to analyze a moment in the extraordinary life of Silvio Berlusconi, you should probably choose the evening of November 8, 2011, writes Antonio Polito for "Corriere della Sera".
Not the day he opened his first shipyard, in Brugherio, in 1964, or when he founded Fininvest, in 1975, paving the way for a television and financial empire that made him one of the richest men in the world.
Not even the day he took to the field, on his way to winning three and a half elections and leading four governments for a record nine years. Nor the time when he landed by helicopter on the Arena field to inaugurate the epic history of Milan, who won five Champions Leagues and eight Scudettos in 31 years.
No!
Berlusconi got so much of that power in his life that the real magic moment, the moment to tell, is the one in which he lost it.
That's how things were.
Italy was falling apart as markets attacked public debt. "Spread" over 500 points. Merkel and Sarkozy laughed at him in public. Europe that was afraid of sinking together with Italy. Gianfranco Fini had created a party and moved to the opposition. Eight deputies, all former loyalists, betray Cavaliere in a crucial vote, causing him to lose his majority in Montecitorio.
But he wants to resist. Do not give up! Do not resign as prime minister! "That makes you Berlusconi," suggests everyone around him, who have always lived in the reflected light and want to keep it burning.
But then two phone calls come. The first is from Ennio Doris, a friend and former partner in Mediolanum, who tells him "Silvio, if you don't resign, Italy will collapse". The second is from his son Luigi, who works in the city of London, who told him "Dad, if Italy collapses, our companies will collapse too."
Thus, the Black Knight, Cayman, who in the film played by Nanni Moretti in the end incites the popular revolt not to give up power, resigns accepting the inexorable logic of democratic politics. And in a single afternoon, the most used argument against him, the "conflict of interest" between private companies and public office, turns into its opposite. Having pursued power, according to his enemies only for his own interest, he must give up power for his own interest as well.
The "larger-than-life", extraordinary dimension of Cavaliere's human and political history is all in the moment in which he left the Palazzo Chigi for good (and which he subsequently repeatedly declassified as a "conspiracy" simple, thereby doing injustice above all to himself and the responsible choice he made).
Because Berlusconi was a phenomenon. The will to power, of course, but also historical necessity. Together the fruit of the Italian disease and at the same time his attempt to cure. Not the villain who overwhelms a gullible people with horse doses of television sales, as depicted; but not the savior of the fatherland who frees his country from the Cossacks of Occetto, the first of many leaders of the left who defeated.
On the contrary, for better or worse, the founder of a new right and a new politics, with liberal ambitions and populist features, that has inspired other countries in the world and dominated the Italian scene for 20 years, even when he was in opposition. And then it ended with him, so much so that in order to win again he had to change his skin, sex, age and be embodied in Giorgia Meloni, his anthropological opposite.
Anti-Berlusconi professionals have accused him of every crime. And it is true that more than 20 lawsuits have been filed against him, with various accusations, sometimes particularly defamatory, such as the exploitation of child prostitution in the person of Ruby, one of the many female participants he hosted in his villas; or as the suspicion of collaboration with the mafia that led to the conviction and imprisonment of one of his greatest friends and comrades-in-arms, Marcello Dell'Utri; or even the accusation that he had plotted the massacres of 1993 to accelerate his political triumph. He has been found not guilty, not guilty, or otherwise exonerated of nearly all charges, thanks in part to his now-deceased lawyer, Ghedini.
Therefore, if the law, that of the judges and not only the prosecutors, is to be believed, Berlusconi has committed only one crime: tax fraud, for which he was sentenced with a final sentence.
This cost him a quick defense from the Senate, the majority of which did not miss the opportunity and by an open vote sanctioned his incompatibility.
Of course, he was by no means a saint, on the contrary, he had his private and public vices and knew how to play foul. There are those who scolded him until the end, mercilessly, like his eternal enemy Carlo De Benedetti, who even when his opponent was in the hospital with Covid, wished him a happy birthday, but repeating that for him it was always pure "a fraud".
The mere fact that he saw it in his dream told us all about the twilight of his age.
He has many alibis. And not only in the stubborn frenzy of prosecutors. The two epochal tragic events that shook the world early in his administration, the attack on the Twin Towers in 2001 and the subprime crisis in 2008, certainly curbed his ambitions.
Once Don Verzè, the founder of San Raffaele in Milan, with whom he was a friend and benefactor, revealed that he had asked him "to live up to 150 years to fix Italy".
He was counting on the advancement of science or perhaps he was joking about his right to immortality. He died in the same hospital aged 86, just two years older than the national average age.
