Former Brazilian presidential candidate Flavio Bolsonaro said on Friday that he fled the country after his election defeat to escape criminal prosecution.

"The persecution began much earlier than I imagined," Senator Bolsonaro said in a video he shared on Instagram, referring to his decision to leave Brazil for the United States.

In the video, he said that on Monday after visiting his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is under house arrest, police informed him that his passports were being confiscated as part of a money laundering investigation.

He did not provide details about how he left the country, adding that he made the decision with his wife without anyone knowing.

"I left for the good of Brazil," said Flavio Bolsonaro, who refused to accept his defeat by center-left President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in the second round of the election.

He spoke of “electoral fraud,” despite denials from both his party and the judiciary. In the video, he compared the election irregularities to “hand-scored goals” that were not canceled by VAR.

He predicted that Brazil would "go bankrupt" under Lula and declared himself ready to run for president again.

"I'm not talking about 2030, but sooner," he said.
