Neria Leiter, the son of Israel's ambassador to the United States, Yechiel Leiter, has been seriously injured in a car attack at a checkpoint in the West Bank. The 38-year-old, a reservist in the Israeli army, is in critical condition and has undergone complex brain surgery.

The incident took place on Wednesday near the Israeli settlement of Beit Horon, west of Ramallah. According to Israeli authorities, a Palestinian man rammed his vehicle into a soldier at a checkpoint before being shot dead by Israeli forces.

The injured man was transported to Shaare Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem, where he underwent several interventions, including a brain surgery that lasted several hours. According to doctors, his condition remains serious and his life is still in danger.

After news of his son's injury, Ambassador Yechiel Leiter left New York and returned to Israel to be by his side.

Leiter had planned to attend Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's speech at the United Nations General Assembly.

In his public statements, the ambassador said that doctors were fighting for his son's life and expressed hope for his recovery.

Netanyahu also visited the soldier's family in the hospital before his departure for New York for the UN General Assembly.

According to Israeli authorities, the person driving the vehicle was identified by Palestinian authorities as Mahmoud Suleiman, 29. He was shot dead by Israeli forces after the vehicle hit the soldier.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health confirmed the death of a 29-year-old man by that name and said his body was being held by Israeli authorities.

Following the incident, Israeli forces conducted searches in the village of Beit Ur, where the suspect reportedly hailed from. According to the mayor of the area, the village's entrances were blocked and searches were conducted in homes.

Neria Leiter's injury comes after his older brother, Moshe Yedidya Leiter, who also served in the Israeli army, was killed during fighting in the Gaza Strip in November 2023.

According to the family, Neria had continued to serve as a reservist even after his brother's death and had completed hundreds of days of reservist service on various fronts since October 2023.

The attack occurred during a period of high tension in the West Bank, where attacks on Israelis, Israeli military operations and increased settler violence against Palestinians have been recorded in recent months.
