More than 10 million tourists visited our country in 2023, thus reaching a historical record. This boom has brought an increase in income, which comes directly from tourism in the economy, but also indirect income to the supporting industries, or related to the sector, which are known as the value chain. What are the reasons that the value chain for some industries is not working and how can these links be strengthened to maximize the economic and social benefit from tourism?
What should be done with this sector when expectations are very high for the new tourist season, targeting 13-15 million visitors, and when hotel reservations have increased by 30%? The President of the Hotel-Tourism Association, Zak Topuzi, said in an interview for Scan TV that infrastructure and the lack of workforce remain a challenge this season. According to him, tourist operators should work hard to increase the quality of services, staff qualification and increase salaries.
"From the information we have, there is an increase of 30% in bookings of complete packages in hotels on the coast, and this makes the situation in Albania positive. Bookings have been visible for the months of January-February, which in previous years have been dead months, for 2024 there has been a double-digit increase and these are certainly positive signals. We must mobilize and the main responsibility belongs to the local government, the central government, and also the businesses must cooperate closely to create convenience and maximum opportunities for vacationers", says the president of the Hotel-Tourism Association.
Estimating the growth of elite tourism by 26%, one of the destinations that can have a high impact in this sector according to Topuz, is the new port of Durrës.
"One of the destinations that can be called elite tourism is the Durrës yacht port, but according to the investors themselves, it is expected to be closed for 5-7 years. We have to prepare gradually. In an important conference, where we discussed with one of the most important strategic investors Alabbar, he expressed his opinion about Albanian tourism and the most important points were that this opportunity that Albania has should not be lost, so that these tourists who come to have contact with the local people, to learn from the history of the country and to learn from their customs. If you lose this opportunity according to Alabbar, we will lose a lot of Albanian tourism", said Topuzi.
Topuzi emphasizes that tourists should not see Albania as a low-cost country, while he also appreciates the development of agritourism in the country.
