Imports in 2023, KESH bought about 68 million euros of energy

The Albanian Electric Power Corporation (KESH) bought on the free market in 2023 more than 561 thousand MWh of energy, with a value of about 68 million euros including VAT.

Annual data published by the Energy Regulatory Authority (ERE) show that these imports are several times lower in value compared to 2022 when they exceeded 500 million euros. The average price with which KESH provided 1 MWh of energy was 110 euros, with a noticeable drop from the prices at the peak of the energy crisis, such as 2022, when at the end of August at peak times 1 MWh of energy was sold for 1047 euros.

Due to the energy crisis, the country was put in a state of emergency for supply and KESH was the company charged with providing energy for consumption in the country. The latter, according to the request, should calculate, as in 2022 and during 2023, the possibilities to meet the need through production from the Drin cascade as well as purchases on the free market.

In general, according to the reported data, energy purchases were concentrated during the second half of the year, while in the first 6 months the total weight was maintained by the production from the cascade.

2023 is considered a good hydro year where the main part of the supply in the country was based on the production of the public company. The latter, in some cases of high flows, managed to carry out energy sales procedures. According to the data, KESH sold during the last year about 56 million euros of energy in conditions of large flows. The average price at which over 639 thousand MWh were sold was 87.55 euros/MWh.

Another voice that emerges from the statistics reported by ERE is the effect benefited from the sales for the optimization of the economic portfolio of KESH, which is a practice when the company sells energy in the schedules that have a more expensive price and buys in the schedules that have a cheaper price . This effect is calculated at a value of 20.7 million euros including VAT.

During the past year, KESH also had a series of exchanges with the Kosovo Electricity Corporation according to the deposit agreement that the two companies have had with each other for years.
