From the construction site for the Tirana-Durres railway last spring, the mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, promised that the electric train line between the two cities would be completed in March of this year.

'I can't wait, that in less than a year from today, we will have delivered this and the ambition for other works will begin...', declared Veliaj, next to the Minister of Infrastructure Belinda Balluku. Even Balluku reinforced the same completion deadline for the Tirana - Durrës railway line.

"In March 2024, the construction site must be handed over," Balluku emphasized.

Time showed that the commitment to complete the railway line between Tirana and Durrës this year was not fulfilled. The railway continues to be a construction site, as 30% of the volume of works has not yet been completed.

According to Albanian Railways, the delays in this project are related to five elements:

Electrification of the railway line
Construction of railway station buildings and railway bridges
Construction of the railway segment towards Rinas International Airport (TIA).
The extension of the 4 km line from PTT in the direction of "Zogu i Parë" Boulevard
Expropriations
New forecasts show that the Tirana-Durrës railway line will be completed in March of next year.

"The railway line "Durrës - Tirana" together with the relevant railway segments (Domje - Rinas), will be completed within the first quarter of 2025," the Albanian Railways officially claims for Faktoje.

This means that the inauguration of the work that marks the revival of the Albanian railway will take place shortly before the general parliamentary elections.

On the morning of May 22, at the exit of Tirana near the Rinas overpass, work was being done to lay new tracks on the existing sleeper.

At the same time, work continued on the construction of new bridges.

Near the area known as the Limuth Bridge, the railway crossing works were nearing completion.

"The second phase of the project has started in the tendering of the railway stations, while the eight necessary bridges of this railway project have been completed," explains the Albanian Railways. 

Even the last point of the railway line, Durrës station, continued to be a construction site. Workers were removing the old tracks to make way for laying the new tracks.

The works for the construction of the Tirana-Durres railway began in November 2021, when the relocation of the old tracks began. The company that is implementing this project is INC spa, which was declared the winner in 2020, with an offer of 69.7 million euros. The project is co-financed with a grant from the European Union and a soft loan from the EBRD.

The Tirana-Durres railway line will pass over the old line, while the project also foresees the extension from the capital towards the International Airport, a new line.

Also, apart from the five existing stations, three new stations will be added along the new axis from Domje to Rinas.

Rail transport in figures

In Albania, the length of the railway network is estimated at 253 km. Only four railway lines are in use:

Kufi - Gjorm 93 km,
Durrës - Elbasan 76 km,
Rrogozhinë - Fier 49 km
Fier - Vlora 35 km.
Only 873 passengers chose rail transport from January to March. Compared to the same period of the previous year, there is a decrease of passengers by 47.4%.

The decline in the number of passengers through the railway network is drastic in the last decade.

Out of 329,000 passengers in 2013, only 7,300 people chose to travel by train last year.
