The internal debt of the Government, who carries the main weight?

The good performance in the collection of budget revenues has made the trend of the decrease of public debt to be positive. For the first time, after more than a decade, the public debt has fallen below the level of 60% of the Gross Domestic Product.

According to the official data of the Ministry of Finance, the stock of public debt has decreased to the level of 55.75% of the Gross Domestic Product in the first quarter of 2024. The stock of internal debt occupies 30.43% and the stock of external debt 25.32%. In other words, currently the Albanian government has a total debt level of 13.5 billion euros.

But who are the institutions that hold the main weight of the government's internal debt, which is recorded at the level of about 724.4 billion lek in the first 3 months of the year and 99% is in national currency?

Official data show that the banking system is the largest lender, accounting for 62.12% of the total debt, of which 7.96% are bank customers.

Next are the financial institutions, which cover 13.88 percent of the internal debt of the Albanian government.

A significant weight is also occupied by individuals with about 12.09%. While the Bank of Albania has made it possible to cover the internal debt at the level of 8.87%.

And finally, the non-financial institutions are listed, which account for 3.04 percent of the total internal debt received by the Albanian government. Securities issued for the Bank of Albania are not included in this division.

The government's objective is to continue the downward trend of public debt according to the recommendations of international financial institutions.
