Albanians and foreigners give impetus to the import of "forbidden

From cigarettes to fuel, along with beer and coffee... Albanians and foreigners who come for tourism are increasing imports of "harmful products" for health and the environment. Data from the General Directorate of Customs show that in the first five months of the year, nearly 248,000 tons of fuel were imported. In relation to the same period of time a year ago, fuel imports have expanded by 8.2 percent. Consequently high demand means expensive prices.

"Yes, it should. We need it. Yes, these prices are terrible. Even in this period, they only grow", say the citizens.

Despite the increase in price, tobacco is being imported into the country like never before. Data from "Customs" show that cigarette imports between January and May reached 1,148 tons, 4.3 percent more than a year ago.

"The number of young people who buy tobacco has increased. There are also tourists. There are also those who buy open cigarettes", says a vendor at the kiosk.

Imports of coffee have also increased at rates similar to cigarettes. Data from the General Directorate of Customs show that between January and May, a quantity of 3,517 tons of coffee was bought from abroad, 3.8 percent more than a year ago.

Due to the excise tax on domestic production, more beer has been brought into the country this year. Imports of alcoholic beverages in the first five months of the year reached over 3,500 tons, expanding by 3.8 percent compared to the previous year.

Data from the Ministry of Finance show that as a result of the excise tax on these products, in the first five months of the year the state budget collected 23.1 billion lek, 2 billion lek or 9.4 percent more than a year ago.
