The selling price of eggs at the source from poultry farms has almost doubled. From poultry farms, eggs are being sold at a price of 20 to 21 lek per egg, while in the retail market the selling price for an open egg has reached 25 lek per egg.
Representatives of one of the country's leading poultry farms, "Veza e Mëngjesit", stated that the selling price of eggs at the source varies from 20 to 21 lek per egg, up from 10 to 11 lek per egg previously. The trading price of eggs has increased by 90 to 100%.
In the retail market, the selling price of an open egg is 25 lek per egg, up from 17 to 20 lek previously. An increase of 20 to 47%.
Poultry farm managers emphasize that the price increase was influenced by the decline in production, following the death of birds with the emergence of H5N1 influenza at the beginning of March in several silos in the Durrës area.
By the first week of March (until March 7), according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the number of poultry destroyed reached 67 thousand heads after being infected with the H5N1 flu.
Producers also claim that they are facing a decline in purchasing power not due to price changes, but due to consumer fear. Operators guarantee that the eggs produced are safe, since only healthy birds are used in production efficiency, while birds affected by the flu were destroyed and in the phase of catching the flu they are unable to produce.
Bird flu appeared in the country 3 years ago, in March 2022, and the largest drop in egg production was in the Durrës region, where the highest number of poultry farms is concentrated. In Durrës, egg production for 2022 fell by about 48% compared to the previous year. In total, according to INSTAT data, in 2022 there were about 4.9 million chickens throughout the country. Compared to 2021, their number fell by about 5%.
Even during that period, the decline in production led to an increase in the price of eggs, up to 25 lek per egg in the retail market.
Without the help of state subsidies, producers managed to replace dead poultry throughout 2023, and at the beginning of the year they also exported high quantities of production.
For this year, according to operators, the start of state reimbursements for the replacement of dead birds is positively assessed. Market prices for chickens for production range from 4.5 to 5 euros per head.
In 2023, according to INSTAT data, the number of chickens reached 4.8 million heads. Compared to 2022, their number decreased by 2.4%. In 2023, egg production increased by 15% compared to 2022. /Monitor/
