The road code changes again, new definitions for vehicle weights and dimensions

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy has proposed changes to the Road Code, regarding the size or weight of the vehicles that are allowed to circulate. According to the accompanying report, the changes aim to fulfill and comply with the European Union Directives, as currently there are changes in values.

"Establishing the standards required by the European directive regarding weights and dimensions as widely used standards in EU countries will improve competition and law enforcement among operators of professional transport with heavy vehicles as well as a road safety of addition of these tools and less environmental pollution", - it is said, among other things, in the report.

Currently, the Albanian Road Code stipulates that every road vehicle, including its load, must have: maximum width not greater than 2.55 m, maximum height not greater than 4 m and 4.3 m for buses and trolleybuses intended for public service lines, as well as length 7.50 - 12 m according to the number of axles of the vehicle. The code also imposes restrictions on trailers, as well as on the weight that each means of transport must have.

Meanwhile, according to the changes proposed by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy, the restrictions are removed from the Road Code and determined by a government decision, which will have to be issued immediately after the approval of the new Code. This is done for the reason that vehicle dimensions are subject to constant updating of the European directive and that these updates would be better done through the Decision of the Council of Ministers. The proposed changes do not affect abnormal vehicles and transports in abnormal conditions.
