Young people in Albania and the Balkan Region in the vast majority prefer to complete their higher studies and develop in their careers.

According to a survey conducted by the European Training Fund, part of the European Union (ETF), around 81.9 percent of young people in Albania and the Region want to complete higher studies, while only 2.98 percent prefer primary education, 8.9 percent secondary education. secondary and another part of 6.5% are not clear how they will continue their teaching career.

The vast majority of young people, around 82%, said they intend to complete a level of higher education (which includes short-cycle bachelor's, master's, doctorate or equivalent studies).

Of the Albanian teenagers who want higher education, 11.4% of them want only bachelor's studies, 34.1% of them also want master's studies and 27.3% also want doctorate.

The goals for higher education levels of Albanian youth are similar to the region, except in Romania where only 5.5% of young people aim for a doctorate.

Participants in the survey and focus groups mentioned that young people face high expectations from their families and societies. Therefore, these educational aspirations may reflect to a large extent family and therefore societal expectations to achieve the highest possible education.

ETF analysis shows that, however, these expectations are highly problematic because they do not necessarily reflect the needs of the labor market or skills. Parents' expectations often fail to recognize the opportunities in terms of salary, career and job satisfaction that can come from professional advice.

Career tracking studies of graduates can be a very useful tool to guide young people who have not yet started higher education. Labor force surveys and labor market statistics are important elements of information for young people in the early stages of education.

Both in Albania and the region, young people aim to over-qualify in elementary professions that do not require higher education, such as agriculture, forestry, fishing and crafts. Elementary professions are liked by 60 percent of young people who also want to have a high level of education even though it is not necessary.

The ETF notes that schools in the Region need to develop curricula that help students understand the relationship between education levels, occupations and job prospects.
