The Greek Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport announced on Wednesday the tender for the road axis "Ianinë-Kallpaq-Kakavije", with a budget of about 320 million dollars.

According to the Greek transport authorities, the 70 km long road axis will connect the Ioannina region with Albania and will be a closed highway with high road safety standards, Voice of America reports.

The Greek Minister of Transport, Kostas Karamanlis, said that "this is an emblematic project, which began to be planned and discussed before 2005, but only recently became a reality."

The Janinë-Kakavije road segment, in addition to the improvement of the movement of people and goods, is expected to especially promote the tourist movement.

The regions of Gjirokastra and Ioannina have experienced a significant increase in tourist flows in recent years, especially towards natural and cultural heritage destinations.

The new Ioannina-Kalpaq-Kakavije road axis will connect Greece with Albania as part of the "Blue Corridor", a road network of about 1500 km that is mainly financed by the European Union.

The Blue Corridor project includes 8 countries: Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia.

According to the assessment of the European Union, while the road axis construction projects in Croatia have made significant progress, in Albania, the construction of the road part of this corridor was planned to be completed in the spring of 2020, but the pandemic slowed down the implementation of the projects. The Albanian section of the "Blue Corridor" has a total length of 315 kilometers.
