The Euro-Lek exchange rate continues its downward trend, marking a new historical minimum. According to the official exchange rate of the Bank of Albania, the euro was exchanged this week for 96.49 lekë, the lowest level recorded so far.
Market agents attribute this performance to increased euro flows, mainly for seasonal reasons. However, in annual terms, the decline remains moderate, around 1.8% compared to a year earlier.
The relative stability of the exchange rate is being supported by the continuous interventions of the Bank of Albania, which is purchasing foreign exchange to curb further strengthening of the lek, in function of the inflation target. Annual inflation in November fell to 2.1%, mainly influenced by the imported component.
According to Governor Gent Sejko, by the end of the first nine months of 2025, the Bank of Albania has purchased around 800 million euros from the market and it is expected that this figure will exceed 1 billion euros by the end of the year.
Official data also show a significant improvement in the current account balance, which in the third quarter of 2025 was positive by 658 million euros, an increase of 90% compared to the previous year. Combined with foreign direct investments of over 1.2 billion euros, this development explains the downward pressure on the Euro-Lek exchange rate.
However, experts emphasize that these data should be interpreted with caution, as some of the statistics are based on indirect estimates, while informal currency flows remain a difficult factor to measure.
