The criminal case of the Bank of Albania robbery, which occurred over a decade ago, has been closed, but the civil war to return the amount to the Albanian state still continues.
After two civil courts have ordered the two defendants, former employees of the Bank of Albania, to return the stolen amount of 713 million lek, both of them will face the Bank of Albania.
As Top Channel learns from reliable sources, the former head of the stock exchange, Ardian Bitraj, and former specialist Mimoza Bruzia oppose the request of the Bank of Albania, which insists on the defendants' obligation to return the money, considered as damage caused by the theft of the Bank of Albania's Issue Department.
The incident was discovered in 2014, and at that time the bank's rules were questioned. Both parties say that the money was damaged and that an amount of 143 million lek should be deducted from it.
In the criminal trial, the two defendants were sentenced with summary judgment, Bitraj to 13 years in prison and Bruzia to 10 years in prison.
Meanwhile, in a separate trial, the former governor was unanimously found not guilty and was compensated by the Administrative Court for moral damage and dismissal.
Bitraj revealed at the time that he embezzled the money that was supposed to be destroyed during 2010, and that he filled the empty cash boxes with books to lose track, while maintaining the weight.
The Bank of Albania was a party to the process and then initiated a civil trial, although the suspect insisted that he had lost all his money in the lottery and casino.
Top Channel journalist Anila Hoxha reports that the Supreme Court has not yet set a date or a judicial panel.
