The United States did not import a single barrel of oil from Saudi Arabia in July, a first since 1985.

Data from the US Department of Energy released on Wednesday confirmed that Saudi crude oil shipments to the US stopped completely last month.

The decline represents a significant change from earlier this year, when US refiners were buying more than 800,000 barrels of Saudi oil per day.

American refiners immediately found alternative sources for Saudi oil.

Venezuela has benefited the most from the end of Saudi crude imports. U.S. refiners imported about 600,000 barrels of Venezuelan crude in July, compared with about 100,000 at the start of the year.

While there have been occasional periods (weeks) when Saudi shipments to the U.S. have fallen to zero, July marked the first time in more than 40 years that they have remained at that level for an entire month. U.S. crude oil imports from Saudi Arabia are expected to recover to about 300,000 barrels per day this month.

While some Saudi shipments are expected to gradually resume as shipping routes eventually stabilize, experts warn that the current changes could have a long-term impact. Once established, alternative supply chains often remain active long after the initial problems are resolved.
