The Tirana Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Kosovar Alliance of Businesses (KBA) had their first meeting yesterday with the theme: "The growth of the common market Kosovo-Albania as a sustainable opportunity for economic development".
The chairman of AKB, Agim Shahini, said that this meeting is aimed at strengthening cooperation for the national economy and increasing the consumption of local products in Kosovo and Albania. Shahini called on the Government of Kosovo and Albania to meet and talk about the 100 signed agreements, with the aim of increasing the economy of both countries.
He announced that over 600 businesses from Kosovo exist in Albania, but he said that Kosovo needs more imports from Albania, and vice versa.
"The national economy requires closer cooperation, as we as a people depend on foreign products. Producers face unfair competition and do not consume enough local products. The governments of Kosovo and Albania have signed over 100 agreements, many of which have been forgotten, therefore it is necessary for them to increase the national economy. The Nation's Road has facilitated the movement of goods and capital, and it is important that both countries consolidate, especially in the face of economic sanctions that negatively affect Kosovo.
"The government of Kosovo and Albania should meet more often to strengthen economic cooperation, especially in tourism, where Kosovars can easily invest. Albania should also invest in Kosovo, and we support the consumption of Albanian products. More than 600 businesses from Kosovo operate in Albania, but trade exchanges remain low. This meeting aims to highlight the need to increase domestic production and emphasize that both countries need more imports from each other.
Nikolin Jaka, the president of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Tirana, has emphasized that although both countries have production, trade exchanges are lacking. He also asked to review the signed agreements and evaluate the results.
"This meeting is very important, as our governments have a good relationship, but there is still a lot of work to do. The trade deficit is worrying and shows a lack of support for domestic producers. I am skeptical about the implementation of over 100 signed agreements, due to tariff and non-tariff barriers. This meeting should highlight problems and offer solutions. Kosovo has mountain tourism, while Albania has sea tourism; joint investments are essential".
Jaka said that Albania is a step forward on the path to EU membership, therefore it should help Kosovo in this direction.
"Let's not forget that the Western Balkans region is getting ready to enter the EU, Kosovo and Albania must advance the integration in the EU in order to be partners. Today we are making a process between the two countries, we should encourage the Government of Kosovo and the Albanian Government to be in sync with the common policies", said Jaka.
Rodolf Xhilari, member of the presidency of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Tirana, emphasized that equality in VAT is necessary for closer cooperation. He expressed concern about the bureaucracy and greater tax benefits for Kosovo compared to Albania. Xhillari mentioned that the higher price of oil in Albania negatively affects the equality of competition and emphasized the need for equalization.
Shkëlqim Jusaj, vice president of AKB, said that the reason why Kosovo has a cheaper oil price than Albania is because of lower taxes.
