Will there be a flat tax for tourism? The government intends to collect 14.8

The government intends to establish a flat tax for the tourism sector, which is expected to bring a significant increase in income from this sector. Everything is foreseen in the draft National Tourism Strategy 2024-2030, which was issued for public consultation by the Ministry of Tourism and Environment.

The document does not provide details on the level of this tax, but it is predicted that from its application until 2030, about 14.8 million euros will be collected. According to the forecasts, this tax will be annual and will be paid by the operators of short-term rental accommodation structures and other types of accommodation, calculated on the basis of the number of beds that the accommodation structure offers. This, to encourage registration and to reduce the costs of control or inspections.

At the same time, the government intends to significantly increase the revenue from the accommodation tax. According to planning, from the 21.63 million euros that were collected during 2023, in 2030 this value is expected to reach 70.5 million euros. In total, calculating the income from the flat tax, according to the draft strategy, in 2030 the income is expected to reach 85 million euros.

According to the draft, the reform of the tourism tax system is essential, as operators of short-term rental accommodation structures, which constitute an important segment of the market, are currently not taxed. Also, it is specified that a practical step in the collection of tourism taxes would be the development of a platform for registering tourists in real time, based on their arrivals and overnight stays.
