The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, said today that he is against the construction of a tower near Rinia Park in Tirana.
In a conversation with citizens on social media, Berisha said that the DP is collecting signatures for a petition and local referendum against the project.
Asked about his stance on the tower that is expected to be built in the Taiwan area, Berisha said that he has been and continues to be against tall buildings.
"First, I want to guarantee that I have been, am and will be against every tower. But if you go back to the period 2005-2013, you will find that Sali Berisha did not give permission for any tower and you will find that in those eight years in Tirana and in Albania, not a single tower was built.
"So, a person who did not allow, did not approve the construction of any tower, means that he has a clear stance against them. I am categorically against the construction of the tower in the only park left in Taiwan and its destruction ," he said.
He announced that the Democratic Party is collecting signatures for a petition, while also aiming for a local referendum against the construction.
"The Democratic Party is collecting signatures for a petition and local referendum against the construction, as I guarantee you that we will strongly support any protest against its construction ," Berisha said.
Berisha described the towers as "ugly monuments to drugs and corruption."
Berisha also said that the general regulatory plan for Tirana, approved during his government, did not foresee buildings over eight floors in any area of the capital.
