The year 2026 started stronger than ever. On January 3, on the first weekend and what should have been one of the most peaceful of the year, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were arrested on several charges by American special forces, also known as Delta. All of this was organized in a lightning operation inside their apartment in the luxurious palace in Caracas. While for months the statements between him and President Donald Trump only raised the temperatures in their long-distance communications, the threats, intimidation and readiness to declare "war" on each other, immediately ended with the arrest of the Venezuelan president in his residence. And to show the low trust that Maduro himself had in his people, the fact that the protective troops were not at all local as one might think is abnormal. They were Cuban.

The charges that led to the operation were the same ones that Albanians have long heard in their daily lives: drug trafficking and narco-terrorism. According to the Trump administration, both of these charges used by the New York court were valid, given how the number of deaths had increased so much in recent years among American citizens. The majority, undoubtedly, were young.

But are these accusations enough to take such action? Is this just the beginning to create another precedent for the future? How powerful are international laws and does sovereignty exist in real politics today after what happened?

Of course, the US government justifies the war on drug trafficking as necessary and uncompromising, based on the protection of their citizens. But is it only Maduro's drugs that circulate on American soil?

After this question, other unspoken paths open up, where finding a pretext easily closes them. If you are thinking about oil reserves, we must admit that investing in these resources to make them expensive has a much greater cost than the benefit you can secure from selling them. So if the real facts are stubborn, we must turn our eyes to geopolitics. In the time we are living in, we can clarify the ambiguity and dynamics somewhat with the approach of real politics.

Since the dawn of civilization, the world has been predisposed to be led by a hegemony. And in our case, the United States has this “imperial” role. It has and most likely will have. President Trump knows very well that in international relations, if you are not an institutionalist then you will have to behave like a realist.

The vision of how Americans in principle see the world is summarized in four points and the primary goal of every state is survival. States must behave as rational actors, and act according to reason without emotions; all states possess military capabilities and no state knows the precise intentions of its neighbor; in this world of ours, what is worth noting is that it is the Great Powers, the states with the greatest economic and especially military weight, which have been and will be decisive for the fate of the creation of world order (John Mearsheimer, professor of international relations, 1994).

Since international relations are defined by an anarchy, where central authority is absent - state power is the key - in fact, the only one, that varies based on interests. For only through power can states protect themselves and hope to survive. All the bureaucracies of international law collapsed in a single night, showing us that no one is equal before the law, because law equals force.

And on top of all that, let's not forget Maduro's fantastic looks that even a main character in a Netflix movie would envy. As if to show that we live in a world of images, where the value is in the image and not the content, people were inspired above all by his Nike sports suit.

Sales of that model multiplied in a few days, young people found their new style of clothing this beginning of the year and their greatest attention was not taken by the event, but by the appearance. Not even the Nike Marketing Department itself could have organized it better.

And finally, the fall of Nicolás Maduro brings to mind a familiar lesson from Greek and Roman mythology: power built on hubris is never permanent. Like Icarus, who believed he could soar beyond any boundary, Maduro ruled as if his sovereignty made him untouchable. Mythology reminds us that when rulers disregard balance and self-control, their downfall is not an accident but a consequence. In this sense, the events surrounding Maduro are not just political. They follow a pattern as old as history itself.

The world is shaking, new fronts are opening and soon others will close. The world order requires a refresh that with collateral damage or not, will happen. This was just the first start of a new year that is expected to bring us interesting scenarios. Without always forgetting that there is nothing new under this Sun.
