Putin is dying, right now?
Vladimir Putin

The American intelligence community has spoken out: Russian President Vladimir Putin was recently treated for "advanced cancer." As long as American spies accurately predicted Russia's war against Ukraine, there is no reason not to believe this estimate. It may or may not make it tougher, more fanatical, more violent. He may or may not die soon. His illness may or may not make him less competent to lead a country the size of Russia.

What we can say for sure is that Russia's elites know he's sick and that a power struggle has already erupted or will erupt soon. Who follows Putin is now the issue that, intentionally or unintentionally, will inform all elite behavior and policy choices.

Meanwhile, we know that replacing Putin by keeping intact the system he built these 2 decades will be very difficult. Russia is a fascist state, and Putin is the center that keeps the whole system afloat.

His departure, which can now be considered imminent, will create more than a power vacuum, which his closest friends will try to fill. His escape will shake the fascist regime to the ground. Nazi Germany was unimaginable without Adolf Hitler.

Even fascist Italy depended entirely on Benito Mussolini for its coherence and existence. Putin has spent more than two decades carefully dismantling Russia's nascent democratic institutions, replacing them with a highly centralized, personalist dictatorship that extracted most of its legitimacy from the cult of personality he built for himself.

This cult represented Putin as the embodiment of male power. His physical strength foretold and symbolized the strength of Russia. Likewise, a declining Putin would seem to warn of Russia's downfall.

His friends will either be forced to replace Putin with a dictator with similar energy, charisma and popularity - which is probably impossible given the age and lack of physical attractiveness of these people - or they should try to intervene in the system. in such a way as to make him more fit to be ruled by a weaker leader.

But even this will be difficult, as Putin's system consists of coherent institutions, which "adapt" to the logic of dictatorship. It will be extremely difficult to replace individual parts of it, without affecting at the same time the stability of the whole system. Putin's successors, like those of Lenin and Stalin, will probably be divided into the hard and the soft. Under normal circumstances of relative political and economic stability, it would be debatable who would win. But conditions in Russia today are not at all normal.

But whatever we do will, at best, have a negligible effect on the tensions created from within Russia. All the United States can really do is prepare for the Kremlin power struggle, acknowledge that Russia is likely to become a very unstable country very soon, and further strengthen its ties with Russia's close neighbors, who for better or worse, will have to bear the burden of plunging into chaos in Russia./19fortyfive
