I don't listen to the Prime Minister's podcast. Nor has the great philosophical question of whether a prime minister should govern through a podcast ever troubled me.

So when a friend sent me an excerpt from our Prime Minister's latest podcast, I felt no temptation to open it. But my friend insisted. So, I opened it and listened.

The fragment was short. It was enough, however, to leave me a little surprised. The Prime Minister was explaining to the protesting Albanians, including me, that the preservation of protected areas and cultural heritage is the leitmotif of his government and that those who criticize this policy should be careful, because they risk becoming “instruments in the hands of other interests.”

I stopped here.

I have been involved in Albanian cultural heritage for over thirty years. I have been fortunate to work in Butrint with some of the brightest minds in British archaeology. I have collaborated with high-level international journalists during dark times for Albania and Kosovo.

I gave eighteen years of my life, free of charge, to underwater archaeological research with one of the best American teams.

I served at UNESCO and participated in missions from Africa to South America.

All these years I thought I was serving Albania. My family and school raised me with this idea. But now, after so many decades, it turns out I may have been wrong.

According to the new political logic, a person can spend an entire life protecting monuments, historic cities, cultural landscapes, and national treasures, only to wake up one morning and learn that they have been a tool of invisible interests.

This is an important achievement of contemporary Albanian thought. All of us who have wasted years believing that we were defending Albania need a clearer explanation of whose interests we have actually been defending.

When we fought for Butrint, whose interests were we protecting?

When the Butrint National Park was being created, who were we working for?

When underwater archaeological research put Albania on the world map of this discipline, who were we serving?

When the team I was part of brought evidence that overturned a historical injustice against Albania in the Corfu Channel issue, in whose interest was that power?

I would be grateful if you could clarify this for me.

Thoughtful of this new prime ministerial dilemma, I turned the car off the winding Vjosa road and entered Përmet.

I wanted to take some photos of the recent work of the Prime Minister's Government in favor of cultural heritage, protected areas and tourism. Photos that speak at least a little about the reality that stands in contrast to the propaganda of the podcast.

I stopped the car in front of a new building, the Tourist Information Center. A heavy concrete building, located with a “rare urban elegance” right in the courtyard of the “Sami Frashëri” high school, just a few steps from the City Stone, the natural symbol of Përmet.

Përmet, to the reader's knowledge, is probably the only city in Europe that risks having more information centers than tourists seeking information.

There is an information center at the entrance, one at the exit, one in the center and two others along the Vjosa where the only visitors are the village donkeys seeking shade. But the Government of our Prime Minister, thought that the city could not live without another Information Center. And this new one is very large and located not just anywhere, but at the end of the city and right in the school yard, 5 meters from the natural monument of the Permet Stone.

Thus, this building took away part of the space where the children played, so that an expensive building could be built, which today stands empty with monumental dignity.

In an era when every tourist carries more information in their pocket than a two-story tourist center can hold, we continue to build buildings for information.

And here a simple question arises for me.

Those citizens of Përmet who see this building and shake their heads in silent protest, whose interests are they defending?

The Prime Minister asked, "In which African country does the Minister of Education take away the schoolyard from children to build the next idiotic building?" Why and with whose money?

Those parents who ask why their children's schoolyard has been reduced, who are they serving?
Those residents who are surprised how a building with no apparent function is being built near a protected area, what dark power are they obeying?

Maybe they are instruments too. Maybe, but in today's Albania it seems that the citizen who asks questions is always suspicious, while those who build concrete buildings for no reason are patriots?

However, whoever reads it should judge between reality and propaganda to understand why the youth have filled the boulevard precisely to change this reality. Reality Which Cannot Be Hidden Then a Colorful Podcast
