Nothing new from Brussels!

Nothing new from Brussels!
Nothing new from Brussels!

Today Ukrainians and Moldovans have reason to celebrate if they believe that gaining EU candidate status is an invitation to stay in the lobby of a large family of 26 members, but there is not much reason to rejoice when you look at the balance sheet for the Balkans.

Today, there was no good news for Albania, which has been a candidate country for 8 years, no good news was expected for Macedonia, which has been a candidate country for 17 years, - two countries that according to the European Commission have met the conditions since 2018!

But more scandalous is the situation with Kosovo! The only isolated place on the continent! (And to think that even Venezuelans move without visas in the Schengen area ?!

There was no good news for either Bosnia or the two countries that have been negotiating for years, Serbia in 2014 and Montenegro in 2012.

Russian aggression in Ukraine has changed everything for the EU, except for its enlargement policy in the Western Balkans. As it 'expands' to the East and shows extra care for the backyard, the region is losing its "path" to the backyard.

Although it is estimated that since 2018 it has met the conditions for the opening of negotiations, although support for the EU is in the figures of 90%, Albania still has to wait for better days.

The history of Albania's road to the EU is more and more similar to the history of some of our roads in Albania, which know the date when the works start, but until their completion, problems arise after problems: with expropriation, financing, slips , courts, protests, global influences etc etc! The failure to finish on time is covered just as the EU-Western Balkans meeting ended today with beautiful words, photos and videos on social networks followed by visits to the region similar to inspection visits to "construction sites".

But beyond the lame comparison it is clear that now we are no longer talking about standards to be met, but about disputes that need to be resolved.

If you consider what Bulgaria wants from Macedonia, it seems that the biggest concern in the Balkans is not the future, but the past. After 30 years of battle with Athens for the past, Skopje will need another battle for the past with Sofia.

Albania does not have to remain hostage to the disputes between Bulgaria and Macedonia. Instead of fighting for its future with the request to be evaluated on merit, Tirana finds itself in a war of jokes with Sofia who has no claims against Albania ?!

And another unnecessary show today was "Open Balkans" in Brussels. Serbia is at an advanced (technical) stage in relation to EU integration. The "Open Balkans" trio could be applauded today only if the President of Kosovo were present alongside them and the four expressed their disappointment at Brussels' inability to make decisions to further integrate the region with the EU.

Coordinating attitudes with each other in the Balkans should not be done with the idea that we have another alternative than the road to the EU. The idea of building Europe in our home is also the goal of everyone. But Europe cannot be built in our own home without the help of Europe.

Today's EU-Western Balkans summit closed with a beautiful photo of the leaders. Next June marks the 20th anniversary of the Thessaloniki Summit, where the Union heads of state promised that the future of the region is in the EU! Then the impression was created that it was about a near future. Today it seems that the future will be distant.

Today is a good day for Ukrainians and Moldovans. The future Balkans!
