May 11 elections, OSCE-ODIHR launches mission: There will be 26 long-term and

The OSCE/ODIHR election observation mission has officially begun its work to monitor the elections in Albania.

The head of the mission, Lamberto Zannier, stated that his team will closely follow all aspects of the electoral process and will publish its findings in official reports.

Asked about SPAK's plan for investigating electoral crimes and the possibility of cooperation in reporting violations, Zannier said that it is still too early to give an opinion on this issue.

He underlined that the OSCE/ODIHR mission will focus on its tasks and will not carry out other actions beyond the monitoring mandate.

Zannier : Today we officially open the election observation mission. The mission comes at the invitation of the local authorities and will be composed of a team of experts with 12 years of experience. There will be 26 long-term observers and 300 short-term observers will be required closer to election day.

As has been the case for the OSCE mission over the years, the objective of the election observation mission is to assess how these elections will be conducted, whether they will be in line with Albania's OSCE commitments and other international obligations and standards governing democratic elections. Of course, this is whether they are in line with domestic legislation.

To achieve this objective, pre- and post-election developments will be included. Some areas of interest to the mission include; implementation of the legal framework; campaign development; including on social media; the work of the election administration in all elections; resolution of election-related disputes, and media coverage. Observers will also assess previous recommendations

Part of this process will also be meetings. Yesterday I had several meetings with the foreign ministry, the election commissioner, etc., which were constructive.
