VOA: The Committee of the Berne Convention requests the suspension of the works
Works at Vlora airport

The Standing Committee of the Berne Convention requested the Albanian authorities to suspend the construction works of the Vlora Airport and to undertake a comprehensive wildlife monitoring program and to review the Environmental Impact Assessment Report data for the area where it is being built. the airport.

According to the documents approved at the annual meeting of the Committee gathered in Strasbourg at the annual meeting from November 28 to December 2, "the request for the suspension of the works for the construction of the Vlora Airport is due to the obvious lack of respect for national and international laws".

The Committee of the Berne Convention has supported the request to the Albanian authorities "on a preliminary assessment by the expert, treating the matter with urgency after the complaint of the Albanian environmental organization "Eco Albania" that the construction of the airport is progressing rapidly".

"The committee, according to the documents of the meeting, which VOA has seen, noted a presentation by the Ministry of Tourism and Environment of Albania, which recalled that they were not given enough time to consult the draft report and recommendations and that they believe that the situation of Vlora airport should not be taken into consideration, according to this file".

The representative of the Albanian environmental organization PPNEA, Xhemal Xheri, present at the discussions of the parties during the Strasbourg meeting, told the Voice of America that the representatives of the Albanian Ministry aim to gain time for the construction of the airport to be completed.

The final documents are expected to be presented to the Convention Committee at the beginning of next year, where detailed recommendations for the Albanian authorities are also expected.

At the end of August this year, representatives from the Bern Convention, together with representatives from the Convention on Migratory Birds (CMS) and the Agreement for the Conservation of African and Eurasian Waterbirds (AEA) carried out a field assessment of the situation in the Landscape Protected Vjosë-Nartë preparing the preliminary report for the Berne Committee.

The Berne Convention, also known as the Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats, is an international binding legal instrument in the field of nature protection and conservation. Albania signed this Convention in 1995 and it entered into force in May 1999.

Prime Minister Edi Rama, during a meeting with tourist operators in Vlora last month, said that "the works for the airport are going very well and the first flight will be at the end of 2024. "We hope there will be no surprises, Prime Minister Rama declared". VOA
