Albania has been equipped with Javelin systems. The news was announced by Defense Minister Pirro Vengu, who said that they were obtained thanks to cooperation with the United States of America.

In a post on social media, he says that the Javelins will strengthen the defensive capabilities of the Albanian Armed Forces, increase deterrence, interoperability with NATO, and national security.

"Let's make it clear for the people who follow us and for the general public. We are at one of the bases of the Armed Forces, the ground forces, we don't need to give details about where exactly, but the delivery of the first quantity of the Javelin launch system has just been completed. Both Albania and Kosovo are part of this assistance and bilateral cooperation with the US. As well as the first anti-tank missiles launched from these systems, it is important for three reasons. The first because it has to do with an early request of the forces and is finally being realized, the second because cooperation with the US remains at the foundation of strengthening our capacities and increasing defense capabilities. The third important point has to do with the training of our combat personnel with all systems, updated technological equipment, so it has this triple significance", said Vengu.

He stated that this is only the first delivery of the launch units and related missiles and that the second delivery is expected next year.

"The equipment and systems also come to reinforce the missions of our troops, whether in NATO missions or in EU missions. It has a double benefit," said Vengu.

Javelin systems are advanced, man-portable, fire-and-forget anti-tank missile systems used by infantry to destroy armored vehicles, bunkers, and other targets.

They are known for their infrared guidance, their ability to attack from above (hitting the weakest part of tank armor), and their ability to be used day and night, offering the operator a high level of survivability.

The system was developed by Raytheon and Lockheed Martin and consists of a Command and Launch Unit (CLU) for target identification and targeting, as well as the missile itself. This allows soldiers to fire and immediately take cover, without having to remain exposed after launch.
