A day after the discovery of the decomposed body of Petro Seferi, the 60-year-old man who was found lifeless in his apartment in neighborhood no. 4 of the city of Korça, his childhood friend, Admir Sulejmani, spoke out, telling a painful story of loneliness, poverty, and indifference from family members and institutions.
"I grew up with him. Petrika died of poverty, the state did not treat him. Recently they gave him a camp, but the way he suffered...", said Sulejmani, adding that his friend had been facing health and economic problems for years.
According to him, Seferi suffered from heart disease and high blood pressure, had no income, and had long been abandoned by his wife and children.
He lived alone, without any care, and no longer had the physical or spiritual strength to seek help.
"He would come out here, hang out with us, smoke a cigarette, ask for help... he had no choice. He was weak, his hands were bruised, he could barely speak. He had lost his morale, everything," Sulejmani said, emphasizing that no one from the institutions was interested in him.
He says that initially they thought Petroja might have fled abroad, perhaps to be with his children or brother, but no one had accurate information.
"He couldn't explain anything about his relationship with the children because he was a very closed-off guy, you couldn't understand the words he was saying. No one came in or out. He was completely alone . He had a sister, he had relatives. He was even Rita Marko's nephew, people who had once been in position. But he left as a poor man, without anyone, skin and bones, rotten, " he sadly recounts.
Economic hardship meant that Seferi had no running water or electricity at home, and although he was assigned a camp for a while, the aid was never enough.
"He didn't even have a phone. We didn't even hear about the funeral, where they took him, or when they buried him. He was just bones... 8 months of decomposition, a person is disfigured within 24 hours, " Sulejmani concludes the story.
The tragic case of Petro Seferi has sparked reactions in the city of Korça and beyond, bringing to attention the need for more care for the needy and lonely people, who often live in total oblivion.
