“Cryptocurrencies, fighters in Syria and a strategic position at the gates of Europe: When we think of the jihadist terrorism of public shootings, subway bombs and bridge stabbings that have rocked several European capitals over the past decade – the connection to Albania is not the first thing that comes to mind,”

This is what Corriere del Veneto writes, referring to the arrest of a 22-year-old Albanian who, according to the authorities of the neighbor across the Adriatic, was planning an attack on the Adigeo shopping center in Verona.

“This is an extremely rare case of Albanian radicalization,” former professor of Sociology at the University of Padua, Vincenzo Pace, tells the Italian newspaper. “Albanian Islam is organized in Sufi brotherhoods, linked to folklore and traditions imposed by the Ottoman Empire.

"In Albania, they don't dream of an Islamic state," he says, recalling how the faith was banned during the communist dictatorship. "Today, about 70% of the population is Muslim, but it is a quiet religiosity, although this does not exclude the possibility of isolated groups or isolated individuals who radicalize on the internet," he underlines.

According to the Italian press, the 22-year-old was radicalized online, having sought materials and information for making homemade bombs and opened a bank account to transfer funds. The young man was arrested at Treviso airport on August 10, upon arriving from Tirana with his parents, and was subsequently deported from Italy for national security reasons. Investigations also revealed that he was communicating with people linked to Islamic fundamentalism and had planned to travel to territories controlled by ISIS.
